As most of you are aware, anti aging plays a huge role in our daily lives. Luckily, we live in a world that has become devoted to healthy living. We want to feel our best and look our best. Not because we’re trying to be the next Supermodel on the cover of Vogue magazine, but because we love how looking and feeling good brings so much confidence to our lives.
The question I’m asked most often is “what type of skincare do you use?” So, I wanted to revisit the skincare series I did a few months ago as I’ve received so many messages from individuals who’ve had dramatically improved skin results after reading the series. THIS (being able to help others feel more confident and beautiful) is the #1 reason I started this blog. And while so many of you are new “State of Lace” followers , I thought it only fitting to recap my skincare series for you!
Just to give you a little background, I am now in my mid-30’s and have very little, if any, skin concerns. This includes wrinkles, dull completion, breakouts, dry or oily skin, large pores, etc. And, while genetics do play a factor (my mother is still one of the most beautiful women I’ve ever seen), I have to give credit to the skincare regimen I’ve followed for most of my life. So here goes! Keep in mind, patience is a virtue 🙂 There was just no way to shorten this any further so put your reading glasses on…so much valuable info to learn!
STEP 1: CLEANSE
Yes, cleanse! Especially at night. Just think of the amount of dirt, pollution, and free radicals we collect on our skin during the day. Give your skin some breathing room by always cleansing. Here are some of my favorites and why…
CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser: I’ll start with this one as I typically use this cleanser “IF” I wash my face in the morning. I’m emphasizing “IF” as I try not to wash my face with any cleansers in the morning. I’ve spoken to several dermatologist about this and they all agree that rinsing your face with warm water only is best to start your day. Especially as we get older! Using cleansers first thing in the morning can strip away natural moisture that we’ve built in our skin’s protective barriers while sleeping (in case you weren’t aware, our cell turnover increases significantly while we sleep). However…if you find you must wash your face in the morning due to sweating during an early morning workout, etc…this is the cleanser you should use! This creamy, hydrating cleanser contains ceramides and hyaluronic acid which moisturize and restore the skin. It’s also non-comedogenic (doesn’t clog pores), non-drying, and non-irritating. And for an added bonus, CeraVe is inexpensive and can usually be purchased at your local pharmacy or grocery store. I prefer this product over other pharmacy brands because of it’s patented MVE delivery technology. This technology provides a controlled release of skin-nurturing ingredients slowly over time. Helping to restore and maintain the natural protective function of your skin and keep it looking healthy!
Peter Thomas Roth Anti-Aging Cleansing Gel: Ok this product is an all time fave! I’ve been using Peter Thomas Roth for 13 years now and it never disappoints. This cleanser in particular is MAGIC. Not only is it packed with anti-aging ingredients, it gently cleanses deep into the pores removing dirt, impurities, and makeup. It also exfoliates the skin sweeping away dead skin cells that dull your complexion. I became even more of a believer in this cleanser when I convinced my boyfriend to start using it nightly as part of his skincare routine. He’s a professional tennis player so his face is always riddled with massive amounts of sweat and sunscreen. This type of lifestyle is a sure way to have regular breakouts and clogged pores which is why a good cleanser is so essential. Needless to say, this cleanser alone completely transformed his skin. He no longer deals with unnecessary breakouts, clogged pores, etc. I use this foaming gel cleanser every night before bed as it leaves my skin feeling fresh, clean, and revitalized. It’s anti-wrinkle technology helps to clarify and brighten the skin with glycolic acid, salicylic acid, extracts of peach, white oak bark, lemon, lime, linden, grapefruit, and arginine. An advanced deep pore resurfacing action supports natural cell turnover to help diminish the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and other signs of aging.

STEP 2: TONER & ESSENCE
This step is actually one of the most important parts of a great skincare regimen. However, it can sometimes be forgotten or overlooked. Here is a rundown on the benefits of facial toner & essence and how you use them…
TONER – I’ll start with toner as this is the next step after cleansing your skin. After cleansing, the pH balance of your skin can get disturbed. When this happens, your skin needs to work extra hard to restore the balance which can result in unwanted oil. A facial toner helps to restore the skin’s balance quickly. Having a balanced pH level means your skin is less prone to oiliness and infection, which in turn creates a more vibrant and smoother appearance. Toners also tighten pores allowing fewer oils and toxins to settle into the skin. This helps to prevent acne, reduces facial blemishes you may already have, and works to prevent future breakouts. And, last but not least, facial toners provide hydration to your skin which is essential in maintaining elasticity, smoothness, moisture and a more youthful appearance. Proper skin hydration provides an effective base for the application of other facial cosmetics.
Toners are easy to find at your preferred beauty counter or local pharmacy. My advice is to NOT purchase a toner that has an alcohol base and works as an astringent. The toner you choose is meant to nourish your skin and balance the pH levels. Try to find one with natural ingredients like Amore Pacific Treatment Toner. This is my all time favorite and I will likely never use another. Amore Pacific is favored for its concentrated, botanical-infused ingredients. Their toner is a nutrient-rich, soothing formula that works for all skin types, including sensitive skin. It helps to calm and prime the skin to receive further treatment. It also comes in a large bottle that will easily last you 6 months.
How to use:
Toner can be applied by hand or with a cotton round/ball. I personally use my hands to apply as I feel cotton applicators are a waste of product. Pour a small amount onto the center of your palm, rub your hands together, then gently press and tap the product into your face and neck. Never rub as this creates too much tension on delicate skin areas. I recommend tapping because it enhances absorption. This can be done both morning and night. If you don’t want to use toner twice a day, then just use it in the morning after cleansing or rinsing your face with water.
ESSENCE – This is an age old necessity in Korean beauty. Although the Asian culture typically has a clear understanding of Essence and its uses, the rest of the world is still a bit confused on what it actually is and why we should be incorporating it into our skincare regimen. So let’s clear that up right now, shall we? Essence is an extremely concentrated formula that treats skin on a cellular level. Many argue that you’ll see more results from Essence than any other product. It can do wonders for your complexion! And…Essence is largely compatible for every skin type!
But still the question remains, what is Essence? Is it a toner? Is it a serum? Well…neither really. It’s the step in your skincare routine that happens in between toner and serum. Essences have highly concentrated antioxidants, vitamins, organic acids, and sometimes fermented probiotics, all for the purpose of enhancing your skin from the inside out. Specifically targeting fine lines, wrinkles, and uneven skin tone while helping the skin to better absorb your serum and moisturizer. Think of Essence as a skin regenerator. With continued use, you will definitely look more youthful. For me personally, I find that I wear less makeup than ever before due to a smoother complexion with the continued use of Essence.
How to use:
After cleansing your skin, apply toner to rebalance your pH levels which will prep your skin to receive Essence. Don’t be deceived by the watery consistency of essences as they are packed with nutrients and moisture that your skin will literally drink up. Follow the same application steps as your toner. Pour a small amount onto the center of your palm, rub your hands together, then gently press/tap the product into your face and neck.
If you are just starting out with toners and/or essence, my advice is to begin this journey by first incorporating a toner into your regimen. Essence can come later when you develop a more steady routine and feel that you’re ready to take your skincare to the next level. Also, keep in mind that essences can be very expensive and hard to come by. They have just started to become more widely available outside the Asian countries. The skincare company SK-II was first on the market in the U.S. and many other countries. Now, just within the past year, other skincare companies have started to follow suit with this incredible product. Sephora now offers a variety of essences with different price points. I personally use SK-II Facial Treatment Essence as it is made up of 90% Pitera which is a clear liquid rich in vitamins, amino acids, minerals and organic acids. I will discuss more in depth on Pitera in Step 3.

STEP 3: SERUM
Ok, this is my absolute favorite step in a good skincare regimen. In order to get the best results for gorgeous looking skin, you must use a serum! Serums are formulated to target specific skin problems and are loaded with nourishing ingredients that have the ability to penetrate deep within the layers of your skin so you achieve phenomenal results. Unlike other skin products, facial serums have a higher concentration of active ingredients including antioxidants, nutrients, ceramides, glycerin, and vitamins. For example, while most face creams contain only 5-10% of active ingredients, facial serums can contain up to 70%!
As I mentioned earlier, serums are formulated to target specific skin problems. Whether the problem be dryness, dull complexion, acne, dark spots, wrinkles, fine lines, etc., facial serums will most definitely help. The most common benefits of this coveted product include hydration, increased nourishment, brightening of the skin, and acne prevention. They also aid in strengthening skin cells, which in turn helps to restore natural moisture and elasticity.
How to use:
So how and when do I use a serum you ask? Serum application should take place after your toner and/or essence, and before your moisturizer. Serums are used in this extra “in between” space to pack in more beneficial ingredients and antioxidants than any other product in your skincare routine. Serums typically have a lightweight gel-like consistency. They will not replace your daytime or nighttime moisturizer, but they will boost your anti-aging results and overall skin health when used morning and evening. However, if you have very oily skin, a well-formulated serum can act as your PM moisturizer. Food for thought…when first adding a facial serum into your skincare regimen, you will likely see improvements right away as the antioxidant-rich formula soothes and brightens skin. Over the long term, skin will look and feel healthier while signs of damage and aging fade significantly. Here’s a list of serums that I use religiously and hope to never live without…
SK-II Facial Treatment Repair C: Contrary to it’s name, this treatment serum doesn’t actually contain vitamin C. Rather, it’s a nutrient-rich serum with a mix of concentrated Pitera and Hyaluronic acid which reduces the appearance of wrinkles and helps to refine skin texture and elasticity. Before we go any further, I MUST explain Pitera and how it’s a true phenomenon in skincare…
Years ago, the scientist at SK-II were on a mission to find the next miracle in skincare. Something that could dramatically improve the skin’s natural surface rejuvenation process. In Asian countries, they began to notice how the wrinkled faces of the aged Sake Brewers differed drastically from the brewers youthful hands. The scientists concluded that the secret must lie in the yeast that the Brewers hands were in constant contact with during the Sake fermentation process. After a decade, they discovered a single yeast strain that held the secret to clear and youthful skin. This clear liquid rich in vitamins, amino acids, organic acids, and minerals is called Pitera. Pretty cool, right?!?!
I use this particular serum during my morning skincare routine. I rarely come across a product that I believe in more than this one. During my recent travels, I used my last drop of this miracle serum and was without it for 3 weeks. During that time, I started to notice changes in my skin (i.e. dull complexion, rough patches, etc). Within 1-2 days of repurchasing and adding back into my routine, I had at least 4 people in one day comment on how wonderful my skin looked. I will forever be a supporter of this skincare line and its products!
SkinMedica TNS Essential Serum: I’ve discussed SkinMedica products in some of my previous posts as it is truly one of the best medical grade skincare lines I’ve ever encountered. This particular serum is a rejuvenating treatment that hydrates and firms to improve the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, uneven tone and rough texture. It contains two treatments…APS Corrective Complex and TNS Recovery Complex. For starters, APS Corrective Complex is a blend of antioxidants and peptides that improves the skin’s overall appearance. And to take it to a level that we never thought possible, TNS Recovery Complex is a mix of growth factors, matrix proteins and antioxidants that softens fine lines and wrinkles. You are guaranteed to have more youthful skin within a month!
I use this serum during my nightly skincare routine. Typically every other night as I’m hoarding it due to the astronomical price tag! But now that I’ve used it and seen the benefits, I’m hooked! If you have the funds in your budget, you must give this one a try!
SkinMedica Lytera Skin Brightening Complex: This serum features a proprietary blend of ingredients that work together to help brighten and even skin tone by reducing the appearance of dark spots. While this product alone will not get rid of dark spots all together (only laser treatment will do that…see my post on “IPL Laser Treatments”) it significantly improves discolorations, evenness, appearance, radiance, and clarity of the skin tone. This product truly helps to brighten the skin!
I use Lytera during my nightly skincare routine on the nights that I don’t use the TNS serum. I like to rotate the 2 products as both give me benefits I need. However, if your primary reason for using a serum is to brighten your skin and achieve more even skin tone, it is most beneficial to use this product both morning and night.
The only downfall to serum is the expensive price tag due to the high concentration of active ingredients. But, hey, still cheaper than a face lift right?? If you have the budget in your income, please try the ones I’ve discussed here as you will not be sorry!
If these are out of your budget (and I can certainly understand why they would be), don’t worry! Here are a few more affordable options that have proved time and time again to be incredible serums. Most can be purchased at your local pharmacy/drug store. Or you can purchase them online here…
**DISCLAIMER: Always test product on a small patch of your skin before absorbing all over. Many people as well as several of my friends are allergic to topical ingredients such as Vitamin C. Do your research and a patch test before purchasing.
STEP 4: MOISTURIZE
Moisturizers are important because they provide hydration which allows skin to function at peak performance. Skin cells can then rapidly repair themselves and turnover fresh cells, which means huge anti-aging benefits. Individuals who use moisturizer are found to develop wrinkles at a fraction of the rate of those with dry skin. For men, moisturizing is particularly important as some researchers have found that being a male makes you more likely to show signs of aging. The benefits of moisturizing your skin will be visible for years to come. In other words, it’s not just meant to help your skin today, but during those future years when we need it most.
Facial moisturizers can be tricky. Especially with different age groups, ethnicities, skin textures, climate, etc. The key is finding a moisturizer that is right for your skin type. If you are a teenager or in your early 20’s, you will clearly use a different moisturizer than someone in their 40’s. Same with someone in their 30’s compared to a 60 year old. As we get older, our skin stops producing as much natural moisture, making it necessary to graduate to thicker and more concentrated moisturizers. Teenagers, young adults, and individuals that are prone to oily skin should choose moisturizers that are “oil free” and “non-comedogenic” (doesn’t clog pores). Don’t forget that climate, stress, and pollution play a role in our skin’s hydration as well. Colder weather typically causes dryer skin while stress and pollution actually drain hydration which impacts pre-mature aging and uneven skin texture. So yes, you should be using a moisturizer daily! Here are a few that I love and why…
CeraVe Facial Moisturizing Lotion PM: Both my boyfriend and I use this moisturizer and absolutely love it! We keep stocks of it underneath the sink actually. Even though this product is marketed as a “PM” moisturizer, it can definitely be used both morning and night. I personally use it in the morning as it is oil free, lightweight, and moisturizes my skin just enough before putting on makeup. I don’t have to worry about my makeup sliding down my face half way thru the day from a heavy, greasy moisturizer! I also use this one in the morning because it does not contain sunscreen. Wait, what?? Yes, I go with a moisturizer in the morning that does not contain sunscreen as my daily makeup contains at least SPF 30 as well as zinc. I really don’t like doubling up on sunscreen in my moisturizer and makeup as it just isn’t necessary and tends to clog pores. However, for you guys and gals that don’t wear makeup, CeraVe also makes a daytime moisturizer with SPF 30 that is wonderful, CeraVe Facial Moisturizing Lotion AM. Both moisturizers, AM and PM, help repair and restore your skin’s natural protective barrier with ceramides, niacinamide, and hyaluronic acid. As a bonus, these products are non-comedogenic (do not clog pores) and non-irritating. Perfect for most all skin types, inexpensive, and can be purchased at your local pharmacy/drug store!
Nivea Soft Moisturizing Creme: My love affair for Nivea creme developed only a few years ago. At the time, I was reading the International Bestselling book “La Prisonniere.” This novel is based on a true story about a high society family who lived their daily lives closely with the King of Morocco. Well, at least until things went terribly wrong with their involvement in trying to assassinate the King. Anyways, I’ll spare you the book review and get to my point! The book is narrated by the eldest daughter of the high society family. She speaks about the undeniable youth and beauty of her mother. Real life pictures are shown in the book to prove this fact. The mother’s beauty secret revealed in the book is a lifetime of using Nivea Creme! Shortly after reading this book I met one of my now closest friends. We were discussing skincare one day when she revealed that she had been using Nivea Creme most of her life. She is in her early 40’s but looks a good 10-15 years younger. After this, I was convinced I had to try it but was worried about it being too heavy for my skin. In my pursuit, I found that Nivea now makes a lightweight version of their creme called Nivea Soft that is enriched with Vitamin E and Jojoba Oil. It makes my skin incredibly soft and supple! Plus, it’s inexpensive and can be purchased at your local pharmacy/drug store.
SkinMedica GlyPro Renewal Cream: Yep! Another SkinMedica product! Clearly I believe in their products and always see results. Again, SkinMedica is medical grade skincare so of course its fantastic! The GlyPro Renewal Cream contains a significant amount of glycolic acid which helps diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles while helping to support natural skin turnover for softer and smoother skin. This moisturizer also contains loads of antioxidants, peptides, Vitamin E and C. The combination of these key ingredients not only improve signs of aging, but also help to lock in moisture to continuously hydrate the skin. And here’s an added bonus…If your skincare regimen includes brightening products to reduce dark spots, the combined use of glycolic acid with those products will actually accelerate your results. For example, I use this product on nights that I use SkinMedica Lytera Brightening Complex (discussed in Step 4). The results are truly astounding!
If you are looking for immediate and long lasting results to reduce signs of aging and smooth skin tone, you have to try this moisturizer! The results will hands down turn you into a believer. I use GlyPro Renewal Cream at night on rotation with Nivea Soft. Simply because this product is expensive and too much gycolic acid can sometimes be a bit much for my skin (I’m a little on the sensitive side). This is just a personal choice. If GlyPro works for your skin on a nightly basis, then definitely use it! Its truly skin changing :-).

STEP 5: EYE CREAM
If you’ve read my bio, you know that I started using eye cream at the age of 15. And I’m thankful every day that I did! Eye cream helps keep the eye area moisturized in order to prevent and control the signs of skin damage and aging. One of the best ways to maintain the good condition of the eye area is to start using eye creams at an early age. It is a preventive measure that delays the signs of aging. As soon as my nieces become teenagers, I will insist they begin using eye cream. The youngest one will listen to me…the older one will not ;-). Let’s face it, aging is a given for all of us. However, aging gracefully is a choice!
The skin around your eyes differs from the the rest of your skin as it is much thinner. The skin around the eye area is more delicate and prone to a variety of issues including puffiness, dark circles, wrinkles, and sagging. Not to mention, there are minimal oil glands around your eyes to help keep the skin naturally hydrated. Therefore, finding the right eye cream can help ward off numerous complexion concerns. Eye creams are specially formulated for the thinner, more sensitive area around your eyes which is why they are so beneficial.
Like many people, I struggle with eye allergies. So finding an eye cream that doesn’t cause a rash or make me want to claw my eyes out has been a real task. And, on top of that, I’ve had an even more difficult time finding an eye cream that I feel really works. Depending on what concerns you have (aging, dark circles, etc.) it’s best to always try samples first. This will allow you to obtain more of a grasp on what you’re actually looking for in an eye cream. For me, I prefer an eye cream that is thick, creamy, loaded with vitamins, peptides, antioxidants, and free of fragrance. Others may prefer a gel or light weight cream for under the eye. It’s really your preference so I suggest giving a few a try. The most important thing is to find one that you like and use it! Here are the products that I use around my eye area and can truly stand behind…
SkinMedica TNS Eye Repair: I use this eye cream during my morning skincare regimen. The “TNS” is a patented growth factor that rebuilds cells to improve overall appearance. The peptides in this eye cream help to diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It has a rich, creamy texture that supplies plumping moisture with hyaluronic acid in order to diminish dehydration lines and increase radiance. Vitamins A, C and E provide antioxidant protection to condition the skin and help lighten dark circles under the eyes. After using this product, my eyes always look brighter, and smoother. This eye cream is a perfect hydrating formula to start your day. I hope to use it forever!
Vitamin E Oil: At night, just before bed, I apply pure Vitamin E Oil. Yes, it is thick and sticky but will soak into your skin overnight. You’re just going to sleep so who cares right?? I began using this at night as I was looking for a product that would hydrate my eyes through the night while I slept (cell turnover is at its peak during the sleep cycle). I started to think about what Vitamin E could do for my eyes since it has been proven for years to repair traumatized skin such as scars, etc. Not only is Vitamin E an all natural alternative that will not add any unwanted chemicals to your skin, it’s also a potent antioxidant that helps protect your cells from damage. After a night of this collagen restoring oil, your eyes will feel hydrated, supple, and more restored the next morning. With continued use, you will notice less fine lines and wrinkles. Note, some Vitamin E oils are “synthetic.” Make sure you are getting the pure oil instead.
Ole Henricksen Ultimate Eye Lift Creme: This is my boyfriend’s preferred eye cream and it has definitely become a favorite of mine as well. It’s my runner up behind the 2 products above. It is a multi-tasking eye cream that instantly hydrates and plumps while helping to improve firmness, diminish the look of fine lines and wrinkles as well as under-eye puffiness. It is concentrated with bio-peptides that help to improve skin’s elasticity while hyaluronic acid nourishes and replenishes moisture. This eye cream is infused with soothing cucumber extract to de-puff and refresh the eyes. The eyes are left looking more youthful and refreshed. It is formulated without parabens and sulfates and seems to work well on sensitive eyes. I really like the benefits and the weight of the cream in this product.
- When applying eye cream or oil, use a patting/tapping motion. Never rub! The eye area is far too delicate. And don’t forget the top of the eye (eye lid and under the brow). Those areas need love too!
- Use whats leftover on your fingertips from your eye application to apply on and around your lips. This is an area that we can sometimes forget about and it shows aging just as badly as the eyes.
- Try storing your eye cream in the refrigerator. The coolness will soothe tired eyes and help with puffiness.
- Use eye cream under your makeup to help concealer apply more smoothly with less build up in fine lines.
- If you have eye allergies, chose a fragrance free eye cream. Also, take an over the counter antihistamine. This will significantly decrease the swelling and irritation around the eyes.

STEP 6: USE RETINOIDS!!!
What are retinoids and why are they important? Why do retinoids have so many different names (i.e. Retin-A, Retinol, Pro-Retinol, etc? Furthermore, should I be using them? These are typically top questions I’m asked when it comes to skincare. There’s a universal misunderstanding when it comes to retinoids and their benefits. So let me put it this way…if you are the age of 30 or older, retinoids should ABSOLUTELY be part of your skincare regimen. If you’re not using a retinoid, stop what you’re doing right now and go grab some after reading this post. Again, this goes for both MEN and WOMEN. Skin is skin people! Regardless of your gender. So I’m going to take some time to educate you on this topic. Here’s the gist…
What are retinoids?
In a nutshell, retinoids are Vitamin A derivatives used in skin care. The term “retinoid” is just an umbrella term to describe the different types and levels of this Vitamin A derivative (whether it be Retin-A, Retinol, etc.). After the age of 30, our skin cell turnover slows down significantly. Producing less collagen and elastin which in turn creates fine lines, wrinkles, and dark spots. Retinoids increase skin cell turnover which thicken the deeper layers of our skin and enhance collagen production. The results are smoother skin, faded dark spots, and less wrinkles.
What are the different types of retinoids?
Retin-A (also known as Retinoic acid/Tretinoin): This is a prescription strength retinoid and can only be obtained from your doctor. It is the only Vitamin A derivative proven to alter gene expression and bring about cellular changes in the skin to produce measurable anti-aging results. This is a highly concentrated retinoid so be sure to ask your doctor about proper application and what to expect while using. There are different percentage levels of Retin-A and your doctor will likely start you off at a lower level like 0.025% or 0.05%.
What will happen to my skin while using Retin-A?: You will absolutely peel, experience redness, and irritation as the product is affecting gene expression (enhancing collagen, smoothing skin, evening out pigmentation, etc.). This will continue for 2-3 weeks until your skin cells adapt to the ingredient. This is usually when most people give it up, but I can assure you, it’s just part of the process. Just hang in there as the benefits will be astounding after continued use.
Some Tips to control peeling and redness:
- Start out by using Retin-A every 3rd night for about 2 weeks, then increase to every 2nd night, and eventually every night if needed.
- Apply a bland moisturizer to your skin first, then follow with a thin layer of Retin-A. I’ve been using retinoids for years and always apply a moisturizer prior to Retin-A as it helps with the peeling, flaking process. The moisturizer needs to be fragrance free and low in ingredients. CeraVe Moisturizing Lotion PM is a good one.
- Apply Retin-A at night before bed. Retinoids break down in sunlight which defeats the purpose. And for the love of all things…wear a sunscreen during the day people! You need to protect that new skin that’s coming through from all the cell turnover.
Retinol: This is a Vitamin A derivative used in non-prescription/over the counter anti-aging products. Retinol is a conversion of Retin-A making it a more gentle product but less active. Retinol can essentially do the same thing as Retin-A, however, it will take longer to see results as retinol doesn’t achieve the same amount of change at the cellular level. If you’ve never used a retinoid, my suggestion would be to start with a retinol cream (I have a few good ones listed below). After your skin has adjusted to the retinol, then you can graduate to a Retin-A prescribed by your doctor.
Pro-Retinol (aka. retinyl palmitate, retinyl acetate, and retinyl linoleate): Pro-retinol formulas are still a Vitamin A derivative, however, they are significantly weaker. Studies have yet to show that pro-retinol actually converts to Retin-A or Retinol when applied to the skin. You likely will not see your desired results with pro-retinol as it’s just too weak.
Some More Tips:
- If you 100% decide that retinoids are not right for you, stick with Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA) products such as glycolic acid and lactic acid. These can also increase skin thickness and stimulate collagen.
- Don’t be afraid to apply retinoids around the eyes as that’s where most damage appears on the face. Studies have shown that people who apply retinoids right up to the eye get the best results.
Although Retin-A is a prescription and will need to be obtained from your doctor, here are some great Retinols that you can start using asap!
